5 Packing Mistakes That Will Delay Your 2026 UK House Move (And How to Avoid Them)

Moving house in 2026 is an exciting transition, but let's be honest—it is rarely completely stress-free. At VanMovePro, we’ve helped countless families, students, and professionals relocate from our base in Stockport to anywhere in the UK, whether you are moving locally within Greater Manchester or embarking on a long-distance move to London, Birmingham, Leeds, Liverpool, or Sheffield. In our experience, most moving day delays come down to one specific thing: how the belongings were packed before we even turned up the van.

Packing is the foundation of a smooth house removal. Get it wrong, and you will end up paying for extra time as your man-and-van team navigates dangerous, unbalanced boxes and missing parts. Get it right, and loading the van becomes a fast, efficient assembly line.

Here are the five most common packing mistakes we see, along with specific, practical advice on how to avoid them.

1. Leaving Packing to the Last Minute

The "I'll just do it on Friday night" trap is the number one cause of moving day chaos. Packing always takes significantly longer than you anticipate, especially when you start uncovering items you forgot you had in the back of your cupboards.

The Fix: Start packing non-essential items three weeks before your moving date. Begin with things you won't need: out-of-season clothing, books, decorative items, and the contents of your loft or garage. Leave only the absolute essentials—kettle, toaster, a few plates, and your everyday clothes—until the day before.

2. Using Flimsy Supermarket Boxes

It is tempting to pop down to your local shop and ask for free banana boxes. However, these boxes are designed for specific weights and are often already weakened by damp, transport, and forklifts. When a box collapses under the weight of your crockery, it doesn't just damage your belongings; it creates a safety hazard for whoever is carrying it, whether we are moving you across Stockport or down to London.

The Fix: Invest in proper, double-walled corrugated cardboard boxes. They are relatively inexpensive and provide the structural integrity needed for a safe move. If you want to save money on protective wrapping, use your own towels, duvets, and winter coats to wrap fragile items instead of buying rolls of bubble wrap.

3. Putting Heavy Items in Large Boxes

It is a classic error: filling a massive box entirely with hardback books or vinyl records. Even if you can manage to lift it, doing so is awkward and increases the chances of the bottom falling out. If your removal team has to spend time repacking boxes or carrying them at a snail's pace, your moving day will drag on.

The Fix: Use the "heavy in small, light in large" rule. Pack books, plates, and heavy ornaments in small book-sized boxes. Use the large boxes for bedding, lampshades, and clothing. Better yet, use your suitcases for heavy items—suitcases have wheels and sturdy handles, making them incredibly easy to wheel out to the van.

4. Labelling the Top of the Box

Writing "Kitchen" on the top of your boxes makes perfect sense until those boxes are stacked in the van or in the hallway of your new home. Once they are stacked, you cannot see the labels without unstacking the entire pile. This forces your removal team to guess where things go, or worse, ask you to check every single box.

The Fix: Label the sides of every box. Be specific with your labelling. Instead of just "Kitchen", write "Kitchen - Pots and Pans" or "Kitchen - Food Cupboard". This helps you prioritise unpacking and allows your man-and-van team to place boxes exactly where they belong in your new home without needing to move them again. Consider using coloured tape for different rooms for even faster identification.

5. Not Dismantling Furniture in Advance

Flat-pack furniture is a staple in most modern UK homes, but leaving your wardrobe or bed frame fully assembled on moving morning is a recipe for delays. Trying to dismantle furniture while the van is ticking over outside is a frantic process that often results in lost screws and stripped threads.

The Fix: Dismantle what you can a few days before the move. The moment you take a piece of furniture apart, put all the screws, bolts, and Allen keys into a small ziplock bag. Then, tape that bag securely to the largest piece of the dismantled furniture. This guarantees that when it comes time to rebuild your bed in your new home, you won't be searching through a bin bag for that one missing bolt.
